Materuni waterfall & coffee farm
A Chagga village above Moshi, a 70 metre waterfall to swim under, and coffee roasted over a fire.
The most popular half day on the mountain, and the one to do after a climb when your legs still work but your head wants nothing to do with altitude. A forty-minute walk through banana and coffee gardens ends at the falls, where the pool is cold enough to be a reward. Then a Chagga family shows you their coffee from cherry to cup, and lunch is theirs.

How it runs
- Step 1
Pickup in Moshi
A 45 minute drive up through the villages to Materuni, about 1,400 metres.
- Step 2
The walk to the falls
Forty minutes on a path through banana, avocado and coffee, with the guide naming what grows. Swim if you dare.
- Step 3
Coffee
Back in the village, a family walks you through the whole process, with singing, and you drink the result.
- Step 4
Lunch and back
A Chagga meal, then the drive down to Moshi by mid afternoon.
